Mickey Boyles III goes on attack during the last wrestling match for Hawthorne.

Wrestling was brought back to Hawthorne through a community effort. Isom Insurance not only purchased the mats but Curtis Isom also drove the truck to Utah with coaches, John Gavin and Palmer Hagen to pick them up.

The Mineral County Booster Club’s generous donation covered uniforms and equipment for the high school and donations from Buck Hall, Mineral County Sheriff’s Deputy Association and the Kenny Bostic Memorial Youth Athletic Fund covered uniforms and equipment for the elementary and junior high programs.

The high school program runs from November – February; elementary from December – February and junior high from February – March. Each year, the numbers grow. Currently there are 25 wrestlers on the elementary team and ten on the high school. The program hopes to have from 10-15 when the junior high season starts.

The elementary team competes in tournaments in Reno, Carson and Fernley.

It is common for all the Rocket Wrestlers that travel to the tournament to pace in the top 3 in their respective weight and age classification.

Shaylee Gavin, Chase Reeves and Alex Bass have been crowned champions in tournaments this year.

It is the hope of that the program grows enough to host a competition in Hawthorne very soon.

The high school and elementary teams are coached by John Gavin and the junior high is coached by Brian Thomson. Sarah Dillard and Anna Gavin are instrumental on keeping the team organized.
