The Mineral County High boys and girls basketball teams both picked up wins last Friday against an old rival, Virginia City.

The Serpent boys knocked off the Muckers 75-42 after racing out to an early 27-2 lead in the first quarter. Eleven players got into the scoring column as coach Pete Summerbell was able to utilize his bench during the second half with the big lead.

Mineral County’s girls got past Virginia City 47-33 a night after taking down Sierra Sage Academy 48-25 to open conference play. Perla Gutierrez led the way against Sierra Sage with 17 points while Jerzi Moody-Isom added 12. Gutierrez had 18 in Friday’s win and Raynee Knight finished with 11.

It was the fifth straight win for the Serpent girls who evened their record at 6-6 and 1-0 in conference.

The boys improved to 14-1 overall.

Both teams play Friday at Round Mountain before hosting Tonopah Saturday.
