SERPENTSThe Mineral County High football team dropped a Homecoming night heartbreaker to Whittell Friday Night, 56-50 in double overtime in Hawthorne.

Whittell enetered the game as the only undefeated team in the IV Northern West division, and they proved why in the second half.

Mineral County jumped out to a 36-22 halftime lead, but Whittell would answer and hold the Serpents to just eight second-half points to force overtime. The two teams traded touchdowns in the first extra period, but Warriors defense held strong on first and goal in the second after their offense scored giving them the wild win.

“During halftime we stayed calm and discussed what we needed to do to get back in the game,” said Whittell coach Phil Bryant. “We needed some stops and we needed some key players to make plays, they didn’t panic and they got just what we needed.”

Mineral County quarterback Tyshawn Bonner scored a total of six touchdowns, five rushing, including a 27 yard run to open the second quarter. Tristan Reynolds also reached the end zone for the Serpents.

Up next, Mineral County will have a bye week to prepare for its final game of the regular season against Coleville on Oct. 30. A win over the rival Wolves would secure a playoff spot for the Serpents.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Mineral County High.
