In what was once called one of the creepiest towns in Nevada by another news outlet due to its mining legacy and ruralness, Mineral County can give off a spooky vibe…especially when the days get shorter and darker. Here are some events happening around the time when the ghosts and goblins come out:

Armed Forces Day Halloween Fundraiser

The Armed Forces Day Committee is hosting a Halloween fundraiser, selling 48 goodie boxes and bags (24 for girls, 24 for boys) with tricks and/or treats in them that could have glowsticks, candy, toys, and more in them. The boxes cost $10 a piece and are sold through directly by the committee members, through its Facebook page, or online through www.ArmedForcesDayNV.com. People can also email armed.forces.day@outlook.com or text 775-866-7705 to coordinate payment and pickup. The contents have been donated by local community members including Bill Singh and Sarah Favero, and the proceeds will hopefully go towards buying a canopy, chairs, and tables for the community to use during the AFD parade in May.

Halloween Block Party at Gil’s Saloon

Oct. 31

People who want to get festive this Halloween should head over to Gil’s to partake in its annual costume contest, raffle, giveaways, games, and specialty drinks served in souvenir cups. Four-ounce portions of Jell-O shots will be available for adults to buy, and local band Moral Demise will be playing. No outside alcohol is allowed, but blankets and lawn chairs are encouraged. Minors must be accompanied by an adult; free rides will be available to Hawthorne residents who get too tipsy.

Family Movie Night at the MC Convention Center

Oct. 28

Bring the family and your favorite snacks to watch Coraline (PG) at the Mineral County Convention Center on 932 E Street on October 28th. The movie starts at 5:30pm and entry is free.

Where to Buy Locally Made Fall Treats

If you’re into “all things pumpkin” this time of the year, then there are definitely some ways to support local businesses while getting your autumn treat fix in. For instance, Mr. Beane’s coffee shop sells caramel macchiatos, chai, and seasonal specialties while Cheyenne And Co. sells lotions, Halloween car fresheners, and more. Cheyenne And Co.’s Halloween scented lotions include witches brew, dragons’ blood, and monkey farts. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/Cheyenneandcompanynv.

Be safe, have fun, and watch out for your neighbors this Halloween.
