Hawthorne Stingray Swim Team competed in Yerington on June 22 on a chilly summer day. For many of the swimmers, it was their first time using diving blocks and the pool is a bit longer than the local pool, testing their endurance. Overall the team did exceptionally well in preparation for the medal meet to be held on Saturday at the Hawthorne Swimming Pool.

Results from meet as follows: Mickey Boyles in the six and under age group; first in butterfly; second in backstroke; 4th in individual medley (IM) (swimming in 8 and under), first in breaststroke and first in freestyle.

Female swimmers competing in the 6 and under age group were: Addison Bostic: first in butterfly and first in breaststroke, Madilynn Hall: second in butterfly; first in backstroke; 4th in IM (swimming in 8 and under); second in breaststroke (tie) and first in freestyle and Colbie Hagen: third in butterfly; 5th in breaststroke and 3rd in freestyle (tie).

Hawthorne’s 7 and 8-year old age group had a strong showing with Hector Martinez: third in butterfly; first in backstroke; second in IM; 5th in breaststroke and 4th in freestyle, Wesley Burrall: 6th in butterfly; 11th in backstroke; 6th in IM, 8th in breaststroke; 8th in breaststroke and 6th in freestyle, Cohen Hagen: 12th in butterfly; 10th in backstroke; 9th in IM; 12th in breaststroke (tie) and 17th in freestyle, Mason Hall: 9th in butterfly; 8th in backstroke; 7th in IM, 12th in breaststroke (tie) and9th in freestyle and Colin Crittenden: 12th in backstroke; 8th in IM; 14th in breaststroke and 13th in freestyle.

Alexa Muniz at her first meet, did very well among a large group of 7 and 8-year old girls. She took 12th in butterfly; 8th in backstroke; 5th in IM; 14th in breaststroke and 8th in freestyle

Aiden Bostic is our only boy in the 9-10 age group and he took 5th in butterfly; 6th in backstroke; 4th in IM; 8th in breaststroke and 5th in freestyle. The girls in the 9-10 also did very well. Maggie Hoferer placed 9th in backstroke; 8th in IM; 8th in breaststroke and 6th in freestyle, Jordan Holton: 10th in butterfly; 10th in backstroke; 10th in IM; 10th in breaststroke and 12th in freestyle.

Reese Holton moved up to the 11,-12 age group this year and placed 4th in the butterfly, 3rd in the backstroke, 7th in IM; 13th in breaststroke and 6th in the freestyle. Also competing in the 11-12 was Lee Dennis: 11th in butterfly; 13th in backstroke; 11th in IM; 14th in breaststroke and 14th in freestyle.

Returning swimmer Shannon Straw swept most of the wins in the girls’ 11-12 age group taking first in the butterfly in a field of 14; 1st in backstroke; 1st in IM; 6th in breaststroke and 1st in freestyle. Shawna Clark had a good day at the meeting placing 13th in butterfly; 13th in backstroke; 13th in IM; 9th in breaststroke and 14th in freestyle;

Brennan Dore, the only male on the Hawthorne roster in the 13-14 year age group, placed 6th in butterfly; 3rd in backstroke; 4th in IM; 5th in breaststroke and 5th in freestyle.

Rounding out the Stingray roster is 18-year old Madeline Bennett in her final season with second in butterfly; third in backstroke; 4th in IM; 8th in breaststroke; and 4th in freestyle. 17-year old Madisyn Carlson won 5th in butterfly; second in backstroke; 3rd in IM; 9th in breaststroke and 1st in freestyle. Sofia Castillo-Trujillo, 15-year old, took 7th in butterfly; fourth in backstroke; 10th in IM; 11th in breaststroke and 11th in freestyle. The swimmers will continue to work on their endurance, swimming techniques and mindsets in preparation for the local medal meet on Saturday with a special emphasis on good sportsmanship

The public is invited to the local swim meet, which will begin at 9 a.m. with hundreds of swimmers competing in 66 events. The Hawthorne Junior High School Dream Team will provide concessions throughout the day. As the 2019 season comes to an end, all the many volunteers, swimmers and their families are thanked for their dedication to the competitive swimming program.
