PUBLIC NOTICE

On behalf of the U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC), Cherokee Nation
Environmental Solutions (CNES), along with Conti Federal Services (CFS), has been
contracted to provide an updated Community Involvement Plan (CIP). The Army requests
public engagement in the Hawthorne Army Depot (HWAD) development of the CIP as
required by the environmental restoration program.
Communication has evolved. We would like to know how to get information to members
of the community, so that the public has an active voice in the environmental actions
associated with the installation. We would like to interview people like you to identify your
concerns, preferred communication methods, and desired involvement levels in the Army
Cleanup Process at HWAD. Your answers to the interview questions will be incorporated
anonymously into the CIP.
Your opinion matters. Please reach out to this contact to express interest and gain more
information: Carla Avery at (848) 327-4448 or cavery@contifederal.com. We can
complete interviews via phone, email, or through online communication such as MS
Teams through October 15th, 2025.
HWAD occupies 147,236 acres of land in Mineral County, Nevada, and is 135 miles
southeast of Reno, Nevada. HWAD encompasses three sides of the town of Hawthorne
and is bounded by the Wassuk Mountain Range on the west, the Gillis Range on the east,
and the Excelsior Mountains on the south. Walker Lake bounds the installation to the
north. HWAD was re-designated with a revised mission to ship, store, and demilitarize
missions under the jurisdiction of the Army Joint Munitions Command. The installation
also performs field training, ordnance testing, and live fire ranges and is expected to
remain an active Army facility with the potential for industrial and military training use.
