Starting August 28, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will begin construction on U.S. 95 and State Route 359 to create pedestrian safety facilities and improvements, and commuters should be aware that intermittent lane, sidewalk, and shoulder closures will be taking place on these sections of the road in downtown Hawthorne from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays through December. Most delays are expected to be minimal, but travelers may experience travel delays of up to a half-hour through the work zone. At least one 12-ft. wide access point will be available to businesses and houses as the work is being completed and pedestrian detours will be available in certain sections.

Pedestrian ramps, driveways, and parts of the sidewalk will be enhanced in downtown Hawthorne from O Street to 10th Street on U.S. 95 as well as on First to Fifth streets on SR 359. Warning pads will be installed at the crosswalks near the work zone and a newly striped lighted pedestrian crosswalk will be installed at the U.S. 95 bypass and F Street intersection.

These improvements to downtown Hawthorne that are starting August 28th and taking place through December will be built by Q&D Construction and represent close to a $4 million investment in enhancing highway accessibility and safety throughout downtown Hawthorne. The cost helps fulfill the goals of the Americans with Disabilities Act by enhancing roadway safety, connectivity, and accessibility for everyone across Nevada. For instance, similar accessibility improvements were made recently in downtown Fallon as part of a separate project.
