The Mineral County boys won its first three games of the Serpent Classic over the weekend, before splitting on Saturday to finish 4-1. The annual Hawthorne tournament had big crowds all three days rooting on the boys and girls, and the home teams delivered. 

In the opener for the Serpents boys, they picked up a 41-34 win over Battle Mountain on Thursday evening, The boys knocked off Sierra Lutheran the next morning 72-50, before coming back later in the day and beating Pershing County 61-51. 

The boys lost to Churchill County 47-35 on Saturday morning in a close game and then beat Yerington 56-54 in a thriller to cap off the tournament. In the final, DeVayne Isom led the scoring with 16 points, 7 assists and 6 steals. 

The Mineral County High girls won its only game of the tournament on Saturday when they beat Battle Mountain 56-27.

 “There was great community support at all the games during the Serpent Classic,” said coach Pete Summerbell. “Now it’s time to get on the road and support the boys and girls in that tough VC environment. See you there.”

The boys and girls will be traveling to Virginia City to play in the Comstock Classic this weekend.
