A Memorial Day weekend fire caused considerable damage to Wong’s Chinese Food in Hawthorne May 29.

Fire chief Chris Lawrence said the fire originated in the kitchen area and caused heavy damage and smoke damage through the dining area and remainder of the building.

The fire was reported about 5 p.m. Saturday evening. Law-

rence said smoke was seen com- ing from the swap cooler on the roof over the kitchen area and also caught some of the wood shingles on fire.

He did not say if there were any patrons in the restaurant at the time of the fire, but no inju- ries were reported.

Lawrence also said a fire in a Hawthorne backyard a few days ago was caused by a downed power line and was quickly extinguished with no serious damage.
