Debra Stephens Cruz was recently nominated to participate in the Washington Ambassadors of Music program.

Former Mineral County Serpent Debra Stephens Cruz was recently nominated to participate in the Washington Ambassadors of Music program after transferring to Bremerton, Wash. as a junior. Cruz, who has played the trumpet for most of her high school career, will travel to England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Lichtenstein and Germany to perform in this once in a lifetime event.

The cost of the total event is $6,300 and Cruz is well on her way after holding a carwash last weekend.

Unlike her former Serpent bandmates, Cruz is learning the art of high school marching and out of the 200 band students in her high school, was one to be nominated. The Washington Ambassadors of Music program only selects 200 from the entire state of Washington.

The daughter of Desirae DeMars and Ben Cruz both of Hawthorne, she is hosting an Indian Taco feed on Aug. 9 with proceeds going towards her goal.

The 16 day trip is included in the cost of the $6,300 goal. If more funds are raised, Cruz will be able to travel to Greece for “vacation” after performing throughout Europe.

Besides performing, the group will be sightseeing as they travel from destination to destination. Cruz, who will be starting her senior year in a few months, is the granddaughter of Peggy Avery and sister of Alecia Cruz. She lives in Bremerton with her aunt, Crystal Avery.

Besides raising money for her trip, she has been going street to street collecting used shoes to give to Funds2Orgs who “work with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunities and jobs are limited.”
