Former Hawthorne Army Depot commander Colonel Craig Short recently retired from the United States Army with his family by his side. He was commander of the depot from June 2014 to June 2016.

Short was in town for Armed Forces Day this year. At this last celebration in 2016, where he served as the grand marshal of the parade, Short told the Independent-News that one of his favorite memories about serving in Hawthorne was the community itself.

“I really enjoy the community. I really do believe it is America’s Patriotic Home. They really nailed it with that slogan.”

After leaving the depot, Short went to the Pentagon working in Army logistics.
