Sept. 7 marks the ninth annual 911 Memorial Mt. Grant Challenge. This event allows hikers the rare experience of the pristine area of Mt. Grant and a view from 11,239 feet. Hikers climb 17 miles, ascending 7,000 feet to the summit of Mt. Grant. (A half-hike is also available to those who want the experience but may not be as conditioned as other hikers.)

Event starts Friday, Sept. 6 with a parade where the “Big Flag” is taken down to Veteran’s Park for the annual flag raising ceremony followed by dinner.

The hike begins on Sept. 7 at 7 a.m. from Walker Lake Township.

The goal of the 911 Memorial is to remember not only that day in history and those who lost their lives on Sept. 11 but to also keep Veteran’s Park upgraded, maintained and the “Big Flag” flying.
