The Mineral County High boys basketball team had another successful week at a tournament, finishing 3-1 at the Whittell Invitational.
The Serpents kicked off the annual tourney with a 64-61 win over North Valleys on Friday that saw Treven Wachsmuth lead the boys with 16 points. Robert McFalls was right behind him with 15 and Devon Davis scored all of his nine points in the second half.
Later in the day Mineral County suffered its first loss of the young season when they fell to Incline, 59-57. The Serpents fell behind 13-4 early but battled back to tie the game at 27 at half before a last second shot that would have tied the game rolled off the rim as time expired. McFalls led the way with 13 points while Tony Dominguez had 12 and Wachsmuth 11. Seth Bozzi had a team-high 14 rebounds.
Jared Dore scored 14 points and Bozzi netted 13 on Saturday as Mineral County bounced back from the loss to defeat Lovelock, 59-27. They rounded out the tournament with a 62-27 win over Pyramid Lake later in the day.
The Serpents now sit at 8-1 on the season and have a break before returning to the floor at the Bishop tournament Dec. 28-29.
Girls win 2
The Serpent girls also took part in the Whittell Invitational and lost its first two before winning the next two.
Jerzi Moody-Isom had six points and 13 rebounds and Perla Gutierrez had nine points in the Serpents 59-24 loss to Incline to open the tournament. The girls fell to Eureka 53-39 in their second game on Friday and were led by Gutierrez who had 22 points.
Mineral County bounced back Saturday with a 56-39 win over Bishop. Gutierrez had 25 points in the win while Lashay Stephens and Raynee Knight each had 11. Stephens finished with a double-double, 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Gutierrez had a game-high 31 points as the Serpents finished the tournament with a 62-32 win over North Tahoe later in the day.
The tournament split ran the girls record to 3-6 overall.
