The Mineral County High football team improved to 2-0 on the young season after picking up a 38-20 win over Mammoth Friday night in Hawthorne.
The two teams traded blows the first half and the Serpents went to the locker room with a 14-12 lead. Touchdowns by both squads in the third kept the game tight before Mineral County broke it open in the final quarter by scoring 16 unanswered points.
Mineral County now faces perhaps its toughest test of the season on Saturday afternoon when they travel to the Comstock to take on rival Virginia City. The Muckers are coming off a bye week after shutting out their first two opponents, Loyalton, Calif. and Carlin, by a total of 104-0.
