VFW POW/MIA Recognition Day tomorrow

Friday, Sept. 15 is National POW/MIA Recognition Day. John Franklin Shain VFW Post 2313, located at 890 A Street in Hawthorne, will be conducting our annual POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m.

They invite every patriotic citizen in Mineral County to join them as they honor the nation’s prisoners of war and missing in action.


The annual Christmas Bazaar, sponsored by the Catholic Ladies Guild, is set for Saturday, Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hawthorne Convention Center.  With a wide variety of crafters and vendors anticipated, they expect this to be a great holiday shopping opportunity.  All the popular features will be back, including photos with Santa Claus, a bake sale, food service all day and an all-cash raffle.  Raffle tickets will go on sale in October.

Crafters who participated last year will receive notices in the mail.  New participants are always welcome and may reserve a table by calling Jean Justus at 945-2206. Tables rent for $20.  They encourage those interested to reserve their tables early, as spaces are limited.

PJammin’ For Cancer event Sept. 28

Mineral County schools will be participating in PJammin’ For Cancer on Thursday, Sept. 28. This event allows participants to wear their pajamas to work or school to raise money for the support of children with cancer.

All donations are welcome and can be given to Mineral County teachers for collection prior to 3 p.m. on Sept. 28. Checks should be made out to Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation.

American Legion burger night next Saturday

Commander’s burgers at the American Legion Post No. 19, Saturday, Sept. 23 12- 4 p.m. Suggested donation for half pound burgers $8 or quarter pound hot dogs $4. Side dish included. Post 945-5226, Ken 316-1853.

4-H leadership program signups underway

The next Leadership Washington Focus (LWF) will be held July 16-20, 2018. The UNCE Mineral County office is now taking names for students who wish to participate.

The LWF is the only national leadership development experience designed exclusively for 4-H’ers entering grades 7-9. It prepares 4-H youth for the future by teaching them leadership skills using an experiential learning model based in 4-H curriculum and the living classroom of Washington D.C.

LWF emphasizes four competency areas: communication, critical thinking, collaboration and confidence. The cost (including hotel, meals, transportation and airfare) is: $1,200 youth and $1,300 adults.

Deadline is Oct. 1 with the registration and deposit due by Jan. 5, 2018.

4-H youth and their adult chaperones, travel as a delegation to LWF. Delegations are organized at the club, county or state levels.

Each person will receive a souvenir pack.
