Veterans Day Ceremony Friday

John Franklin Shain VFW Post 2313 and its auxiliary would like to invite every patriotic citizen in Mineral County, to attend our annual Veterans Day Ceremony.

The event will take place on Friday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Hawthorne. There will be several guest speakers in attendance.

Following the ceremony, beginning at 1 p.m. at the VFW Post Home at 890 A Street, we will be serving chili, corn muffins and salad. The meal will be free to all veterans and a nominal $5 donation for non veterans.

Christmas Bazaar set for saturday

The Hawthorne Convention Center is the place to be on Saturday, Nov. 12 for the annual Christmas Bazaar, sponsored by the Catholic Ladies Guild.

Held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the bazaar will feature an impressive variety of items for sale, with a full house expected.  Lunch and refreshments will be served throughout the day, and the ladies will be holding their popular bake sale.  Santa Claus will be in the lobby from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  A photographer will be on hand or you may take your own photos with Santa.  Also featured will be an all-cash raffle, with tickets available at the door.  Prizes are $300, $200 and $100.  Tickets are $5 for a book of six.

We invite you to take advantage of this great opportunity to shop locally for Christmas, enjoy lunch with friends, or simple get into the spirit of the season.  Merry Christmas to all!

Angel Tree/Toys for Tots Applications Available

It’s that time of year again. Christmas is just around the corner. CAHS is continuing to sponsor the annual Mineral County Christmas Angel Tree Program, in conjunction with Toys for Tots, with Tamara Bunch.

We would like to invite the parents/guardians of “Needy-Low Income Children” to come in and pick up an application for your children to receive a gift for Christmas. The income guidelines will be posted. An application will need to be filled out for each child in the family. Proof of income will also be required with the application.

Applications will be available at the CAHS Office, located at 924 5th Street, on Tuesday, Nov. 1. They need to be filled out and returned to the CAHS Office no later than Friday, Nov. 18, to get your child’s angel on the tree to be adopted. Donations needed for annual coat drive

The cold weather is coming and that means it’s time for my annual coat drive at Estate Sale Warehouse. The goal of course is to make sure anyone needing a coat will receive one for free.

Donations of clean new and used coats, hats and gloves are being accepted now and the coat drive starts Nov. 1 and runs until Dec. 31. Let’s keep Hawthorne warm.

Boy Scouts food drive Nov. 18

The annual Scouting For Food drive, sponsored by the Boy Scouts in Mineral County, will be held on Friday, Nov. 18. Non-perishable food such as: canned meat; canned fish; nuts; peanut butter; dry pasta; baby formula; soups; stews; canned fruit and juice; oatmeal and rice are requested. Please, no glass jars or frozen items.

All food donations stay local by going to the local CAHS office after pick-up. If you have items, please place your bag outside no later than 9 a.m. Collection will go until 12 noon. If unable to place items outside – donations can be made to the CAHS office at 924 Fifth Street.

Mineral County dog licenses available

Mineral County dog licenses will be available Nov. 1, for 2017. The fees are as follows: spayed or neutered dog – $3, unneutered male dog – $5 and unneutered female dog – $7.50.

We will be available to issue licenses Monday through Friday from 12 to 2 p.m. Please bring current certificate of rabies vaccination.
