A small isolated fire broke out in a Hawthorne Army Depot building in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

According to a press release by the depot, the fire occurred in Building 117-3. There were no injuries or structural damage.

“Safety is our number one priority. We want to always ensure the safety and well-being of our employees, “ said Lt. Col. Gibbons, commander of HWAD.

“We are pleased the employees followed safety procedures and all of the safety equipment and deluge system worked as designed. The demilitarization of ammunition mission requires that we spend a great deal of time, effort and money on safety and risk management. We are thankful to see that these efforts have kept our employees safe.”

The ignition point appeared to originate in a container utilized for temporary storage of ammunition.
The incident is under investigation, including a thorough review of standard operating procedures for the job.
