Last summer the Mineral County High baseball team received a donation from a generous resident of Salt Lake City.
The donation consisted of an Iron Mike pitching machine, cage frame, cage net, and batting mat. This donation valued around $7,000. Upon returning from Utah with the donations we immediately went to work raising funds in order to build a chain link enclosure to house the machine. We started with a Poker Run that was organized by the VFW. We then executed numerous raffles at high school basketball games. At that point it became obvious that raising the $10,000 that would be necessary to fund this construction was out of our reach.
We then reluctantly turned to the community and local businesses. After writing and sending upwards to 50 letters, a handful of local businesses and organizations answered the call. We received seven sizable donations in total, from Bill’s Food Mart; Borealis Mining Co.; SOC; Valley Propane; Pizza Factory; Bill Fraser Insurance and the largest donation of $2,500 from the Kenny Bostic Memorial Athletic Youth Fund, totaling $5,930.
Once those donations ran dry we created a crowd funding campaign through gofundme.com on Facebook. A total of 24 generous community members donated a total of $2,720 in just seven days. That leaves only $1,350 left to reach our original goal of $10,000.
It is heart-warming to know that we live in a community that will give so much on behalf of our local youth. These batting cages will not only serve as developmental tools for Serpent Baseball but will also be available for use by our local senior and little league programs.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the donors of this project from the bottom of our hearts. You are truly amazing! Anyone else interested in helping us attain those last $1,350, please deliver donations to the main office at the high school.
