The Serpent Track and Field team is headed to Regionals after dominating the NORTHERN 1A Regional Championships on Saturday at Reed High in Sparks.

“We took 17 athletes to trials and all but 2 qualified for finals,” Coach Phillip Jaramillo said. “I could not have been any prouder of the team, they were resilient and represented Mineral County well. Captains Triston Jones, Devayne Isom and Cade Torres all stated “this is our last year and we have the numbers to accomplish the mission. Our coaches have been tough on us all season and it will all pay off Saturday.”

Coach Jaramillo and Coach Shawn Isom were available Saturday night after the Trials and the two stated “the team has put in the work necessary to achieve theirs goals, now it all comes down to execution, execution, execution, one mistake and you can be disqualified so it’s pretty stressful for us, but the guys have been a force all year.”

The past couple of years if you have been watching the Track team you would know that every year we just come up a little short. Jaramillo expressed his disliking of the point system.

“The top 8 places receive points for their team, 10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1 and every year it seems like we win every event but bigger schools with more athletes will place 3rd, 4th and 5th for 15 points while we get 10 for the Gold but it ultimately ends up biting us in the end and it’s tough to swallow when you win 80% of the events and still lose the team title,” he said.

The coaches put recruiting at the top of the list and had the captains also help getting their buddies to come out and help get the job done. With the rules being that an athlete can only compete in four events it then comes down to Jaramillo strategically placing the team where it’s going to benefit us the most.

If you don’t have no plans on Friday or Saturday come up to Carson High to watch the North’s best athletes compete for a spot in State the next week also at Carson.
