A&C Waste Collection was just selected to be Mineral County’s new trash service, and new rates go into effect on February 1, 2024.

Resident Tom Kerrigan had been doing Hawthorne’s trash collection for more than 20 years, and recently retired a few months ago. Mineral County sent out a Request for Proposals last fall and three companies submitted bids, one out of Fallon, one out of Moundhouse, and A&C from Mineral County. A&C was then awarded the contract.

Longtime Mineral County resident Bradley Larramendy owns A&C Waste Collection, which has been around for five years. His father owns the tire shop in town, and Bradley’s wife Sarah runs the office. Bradley was born and raised in Mineral County and bought A&C Waste Collection to keep it local and affordable.

Bradley admits that people will see new trash pickup rates reflected on their bills next year. Mineral County Ordinance 239A requires all businesses and residents to have waste collection, and a discount for low-income households is available.

Monthly rates for residences are based off the standard 95-gallon trash cart that can hold up to seven bags of trash, and dumpsters are available for businesses. Residential rates will be $21 per month in Hawthorne and business trash pickup rates have remained the same. The monthly trash pickup rates for Walker Lake are $23, and $25 for Luning and Mina. This is the first time that Luning has had a trash collection service. Collection days have been moved to Tuesdays for residences outside of Walker Lake (trash pickup for businesses and Walker Lake residences will remain on Wednesdays).

Residential trash collection rates have gone up, but they are still better than other rural Nevada areas near Mineral County.

“I looked up rates in similar places like Eureka County and they’ve raised them in the past five years,” Bradley says. Olcese Waste Services was one of the other rural Nevadan trash collection services that submitted an RFP.

In conjunction with rolling out Mineral County’s new waste collection service, A&C is also collaborating with the Be About It Foundation to help bolster local nonprofits in the hopes of making a bigger impact in the community. The new Be About It Foundation engages Mineral County residents through surveys to gain community input and put money towards projects that make a difference and meet the goals of their benefactors. Leveraged through the A&C platform, people will be able to make recurring donations alongside their trash collection bills which will help generate a sustainable source of funding that goes back into the community.

For more information about the Be About It Foundation, visit https://acwastecollection.com/community. Mineral County residents must sign up for their trash collection service by January 14, 2024, and the easiest way to do this is to go online to acwastecollection.com and fill out the New Customer form. Its office is located at 253 E Street in Hawthorne, Nevada and it is open Monday-Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can also call 775-945-6009 or visit acwastecollection@gmail.com

“We’re excited for this opportunity to serve Mineral County,” Sarah says.

“It’s pretty cool to see how this community has come together to support us,” Bradley adds.
