Dear Editor,

Time has run out on two important programs in Mineral County.

For the last year the DAV van has had only two drivers. These volunteers drive veterans to appointments in Reno as needed twice a week. Now one driver has family issues and the other driver is on a leave of absence.

As a consequence there have been no drivers available in June. There will be no drivers available through the rest of June and, quite possibly, all of July. “America’s Patriotic Home” Really?

The Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) is not doing much better. One of their two primary drivers is also a DAV driver mentioned above. That program doesn’t even have a local Field Office because no one has applied for that job. All transportation requests are handled through the Program Office in Carson City.

Both of these programs are failing. Veterans are calling 945-9001 to schedule a ride and they are told, “Sorry, there are no drivers available.” Seniors calling RSVP at (775) 687-4680, ext 04, to schedule rides to out of town medical appointments may soon be told the same thing.
