Armed Forces Day Weekend isn’t just for adults…the AFD youth committee has put together a program that appeals to kids of all ages as well as the young-at-heart. New this year, anyone is invited to enter their bikes, scooters, side-by-sides, golf carts or anything else that rolls in the mobile parade to be held on Thursday night at 6pm starting on A Street by the hospital and ending at Care and Share.

On Saturday at 9 a.m., there will be an easy picture scavenger hunt for third graders and up. Get more information at the AFD booth and be sure to bring your smartphone or camera.

Families and kids can also practice their putting skills at the 9-hole Golf’n 4U mini-putt course set up on Main Street. Putt-putt golf will be available Friday, Saturday, and possibly Thursday night.

If you start to get hot or hungry, head over to the MCHS football field where an inflatable playground awaits. At least 10 different types of bounce houses are available which include obstacle courses and a few with water features, so be sure to bring sunscreen and a towel (there will also be a splash pad for the littles). The D2 Inflatable Playground is open this Friday and Saturday from 10am-5pm and wristbands to enter are $25 per day, or $40 for the entire weekend (purchase wristbands online at www.armedforcesdayNV.com). The AFD Committee also accepts monetary donations to go towards purchasing wristbands for kids who would otherwise not be able to attend the event (available through the AFD website).

A concession stand will also be open during the event with hot dogs, chips, drinks, and treats for sale. At least half of all the concession stand sales will be donated back to this year’s graduating senior class for their safe grad event. If you want to sit back and relax and be a little removed from the action, then the Committee could also use some volunteers who could maybe watch over the kids for a couple of hours and help keep them safe as they play on the inflatables.

Head over to Barley’s for a family-friendly cornhole tournament on Friday at 5 p.m.…it’s $25 to enter and there’s a chance you can take on the dad/son duo that killed it at cornhole last year.

And finally…congratulations to those who paid attention and got a free parade entry for agreeing to enter the dunk tank that the Hawthorne Youth Association is hosting this weekend. Find the dunk tank (and possibly one of your friends inside) and test out your pitching arm to dunk them for a good cause.
