Mineral County Fire & EMS is bringing back its Fireman’s Ball, to be held on February 18 at the Hawthorne Elks Lodge on 520 E 5th Street. Doors open at 8pm and close at midnight, and guests will be able to enjoy music by Dock 6, munchies, win raffle prizes, and more.

The Fireman’s Ball is coming back thanks to the Walker Lake fire volunteers, who work tirelessly alongside the Hawthorne and Mina stations to keep Mineral County residents safe. Hawthorne usually hosts the annual Ball (which has been going on since the eighties nationwide) in February but hasn’t had enough volunteers to hold the event so it’s coming back after a few years of being on hiatus. There are 28 volunteers throughout the three fire departments with six being in Walker Lake.

“This is held as a thank you to the spouses and families of volunteers since they are gone so much,” says Hawthorne Fire Department Office Administrator and EMT Heidi Johnson. Volunteers and their families will enjoy a private dinner beforehand at the firehouse and then will join the rest of its supporters at the Ball.

Along with Dock 6 providing entertainment, people will have the chance to win a firearm through the raffle, snack on free popcorn, cotton candy, and other munchies, and there will be a photographer there snapping photos to help commemorate the event.

“If we get enough interest and participation then we can make this a more regular event,” Johnson says.

There are approximately 100 tickets for sale, which can be purchased at the Hawthorne fire station, at the door, or through any Mineral County volunteer firefighter that they know. Tickets cost $15 a piece.
