Early voting for the 2022 General Election is currently underway and there are a few county positions up for reelection.

Here are some of the more critical races for county, school board, and hospital board 4-year terms coming available that Mineral County residents may see on their ballots:

County Offices

Clerk/Treasurer- Teresa McNally (incumbent) running against Cherrie George

Recorder- Cindy Nixon (incumbent) running against Tammy Hamrey

Constable- Gary Schaaf (incumbent) running against Tom Gallegos and Rob Hoferer

Hospital Board

Karen Womack is running against Nancy Rutherford

School Board- Inside Seat

Kristin Reeves is running against Stephanie Flow

Walker Lake GID for a 2-Year Term

Michael Domagala is running against James Justus

Federal and Statewide Offices

A few federal and statewide offices are also up for renewal, such as choosing a representative for the U.S. Senate and Congress District 2 as well as asking voters who will be our next Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Secretary of State. State Treasurer, State Controller, and Attorney General positions are also up for grabs.

Statewide Ballot Questions

Voters will also be asked to vote “yes” or “no” on the following questions regarding amendments to the Nevada Constitution:

Question #1: Shall the Nevada Constitution be amended by adding a specific guarantee that equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by this State or any of its cities, counties, or other political subdivisions on account of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, ancestry, or national origin?

Question #2: Shall the Nevada Constitution be amended, effective July 1, 2024, to: (1) establish the State’s minimum wage that employers must pay to certain employees at a rate of $12 per hour worked, subject to any applicable increases above that $12 rate provided by federal law or enacted by the Nevada Legislature; (2) remove the existing provisions setting different rates for the minimum wage based on whether the employer offers certain health benefits to such employees; and (3) remove the existing provisions for adjusting the minimum wage based on applicable increases in the cost of living?

Question #3: Shall the Nevada Constitution be amended to allow all Nevada voters the right to participate in open primary elections to choose candidates for the general election in which all voters may then rank the remaining candidates by preference for the offices of U.S. Senators, U.S. Representatives, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, State Controller, Attorney General, and State Legislators?

Where and How to Vote

Early voting is taking place through this Friday, November 4 at various locations and then will reopen on Election Day, November 8. The polls are open in Mineral County in the following locations on November 8 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.:

Hawthorne (Precincts 1-7)- the Public Library on 110 First Street

Schurz (Precinct 11)- the Tribal Community Center on 1031 B Hospital Road

Precinct 8 (Luning), 9 (Mina), 10 (Montgomery Pass), and 12 (Walker Lake)- mail in your ballots

It takes the voters to make a difference in the community, so be sure to get out there and vote.
