The Mineral County High football team opened the season Friday with a 40-6 loss to Spring Mountain on the road.
While it wasn’t the start the Serpents wanted, they had some nice moments in the game that they will hopefully build on as the season progresses.
In his first start, freshman Chase Reeves completed eight passes for 54 yards, and ran the ball 12 times for 40 yards and touchdown. Devayne Isom hauled in four catches for 23 yards, and Drake Spanier led the team in receiving yards with 33 on two grabs. Isom also had 111 kick return yards, giving him 149 total yards on the day.
The defense did the best they could to hold the Eagles down, as Reeves, Isom, Cade Torres and Preston Larramendy each recorded a sack.
The Serpents trailed 22-6 at half before surrendering 18 points in the second half.
Mineral County (0-1) travel to Coleville (1-1) on Saturday to take on the Wolves for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
