The Mineral County Independent-News took home two first-place awards and two third place awards at the Nevada Press Associations Better Newspaper Contest, which were announced Saturday at the NPA annual convention held in Ely.

Heidi Bunch earned a first-place in the combined Intermediate and Community division for investigative journalism for her story titled “Officials cracking down on residents living in recreational vehicles.” She also took a third in the same division with her article, “Commissioners vote in favor of pursuing new economic development options.”

Vic Trujillo and Eric Dahlberg took a first place in the community multiple photo essay category for an Armed Forces 2019 layout. The judges said, “So much variety and so many faces. Amazing job of capturing the day.”

Dahlberg also took a third place for front page design.

As part of the convention, three people were inducted into the Nevada Newspaper Hall of the Fame: Vail Pitman, a former Nevada governor and owner of The Ely Daily Times, was honored post-humorously.

Also inducted were Holly RudyJames, former general manager of Winnemucca Publishing and two-time president of the Nevada Press Association and C.J. Hadley, publisher of Range Magazine and former editor of Nevada Magazine.
