Mary was born May 17, 1932, in Deadwood, S.D. to Bernard (Doc) and Mildred (Faragher) Smith. After sixth grade she and her family moved to Hawthorne where she lived until she graduated from Hawthorne High School. In the early 1950s she moved to Oregon to attend Oregon State University and later settled in Southern California. Mary and her children moved back to Deadwood in 1969.
In the late 1970s Mary started working as a live-in caregiver. She loved spending time with family and friends, reading books, reciting poetry and telling stories. She enjoyed participating in slot tournaments with her group of friends, and was active in St. John’s Episcopal Church in Deadwood.
Mary is survived by three daughters, Mary Ellen (Jeffrey Lloyd) Currie, Auburn, Wash.; Christina Louise Losch, Phoenix, Ariz.; Laurie Michelle (Lawrence) Parker, Newell, S.D.; one son, Timothy Losch (Brandi Brooks), San Francisco, Calif.; one sister, Patricia Springer, Spearfish, S.D.; four grandchildren, Christopher Fredrickson, Phoenix, Ariz.; Nicole Merwin, Deadwood, S.D.; Lisa Wonderly, Tacoma, Wash.; Jacob Parker, Redmond, Wash.; and two great-grandchildren, Bentlee Fredrickson, Phoenix, Ariz. and EllaFay Wonderly, Tacoma, Wash.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Dorothy, Margaret, Ruthie, and Shirley, and her brother B.A. (Smitty) Smith.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 6, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Deadwood, with Father Michael Johnson officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes for memorials to be sent to The Lord’s Cupboard in Lead, or St. John’s Episcopal Church.
