fireA Schurz family is left with only the clothes on their backs after an early morning fire wiped out all of their personal possessions and destroyed the place they call home.

The morning of Tuesday, Oct. 21 found the Duke family scrambling to get out of the home located at the 4,000 block of Highway 95 South in Schurz.

Though the home is located within the boundaries of the Walker River Paiute Tribe, the house and property itself are patented county land.

The owner, Shelly and two other adults were able to escape without injury but by the time the Schurz Fire Department arrived, the home was already engulfed in flames. Walker River Tribal Police, Mineral County Sheriff’s Office, Mineral County Fire Department, Nevada Highway Patrol and NVEnergy all responded but the house is a “total loss” according to Undersheriff Steve McBride, who was on scene.
