The Lions Club in Mineral County will light the Christmas trees in Veterans’ Memorial Park in Hawthorne on Friday at 6 p.m. The lighting celebration will be accompanied by caroling,  cookies and hot chocolate.

The club is also holding a Christmas tree decorating contest. Decorators have already signed up for the contest and many have decorated the trees. The 29 trees are expected to grace the planter boxes on 5th Street in Hawthorne by Friday.

A flyer from the club offered a $100 prize to the best decorator.

The Lions Club made the tree stands and B&B Hardware ordered the trees.

“If you plan to light your tree, there are battery operated or solar lights available on the Internet,” the flyer states. “Lighting is not necessary but decorations should be colorful and if at all possible reflect light.”
