PRESS RELEASE
Senate Republican Leader Robin Titus today issued a public call for all Nevada law enforcement agencies to enroll in the 287(g) program, a federal partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) aimed at identifying, detaining, and removing undocumented individuals who commit crimes. The move, she says, is essential to restoring law and order across the state.
“As the wife of a retired sheriff and someone who has spent her life serving Nevadans as a physician, mother, and legislator, I will not stay silent while dangerous criminals remain unchecked in our communities,” said Senate Republican Leader Robin Titus. “It’s time every law enforcement agency in Nevada joins the 287(g) program. With the highest number of illegal aliens per capita in the nation, our state must act decisively to protect its citizens.”
The 287(g) program enables trained local law enforcement to carry out limited immigration enforcement responsibilities with ICE oversight. Despite its successful adoption in states like Florida, Georgia, and Texas, only three Nevada counties—Douglas, Mineral, and Lyon (pending finalization)—are currently participating.
“Three out of seventeen counties—that’s it,” Titus continued. “The rest are on the sidelines while illegal criminal activity continues to plague our communities. This isn’t just disappointing—it’s a failure to protect the very people our officers are sworn to serve.”
Senator Titus also emphasized that public support for removing criminal illegal aliens is overwhelming, citing a recent Associated Press poll showing 82% of Americans support deportation in such cases, with only 6% opposed.
“This is not a partisan issue. This is common sense. Nevada’s law enforcement leaders must act in the best interest of public safety—not cater to fringe political pressure.”
Her call to action aligns with a broader Republican public safety agenda during Nevada’s 83rd Legislative Session, including Governor Joe Lombardo’s Senate Bill 457, the Safe Streets and Neighborhoods Act, which includes toughened penalties for fentanyl trafficking, DUI fatalities, and repeat offenders.
Other key Republican-led safety bills include:
- SB 110: Increased penalties for sex trafficking facilitators.
- SB 127 & SB 131: Human trafficking prevention and training for first responders.
- SB 163 & SB 267: Mandatory bail revocation for repeat offenders; ICE notification requirements.
- SB 302 & SB 304: Sheriff partnerships with federal agencies and tougher DUI sentencing.“These reforms send a clear message: Nevada stands with its citizens and law enforcement—not criminals. I urge every sheriff, police chief, and elected official to back the badge, embrace the 287(g) program, and put the safety of Nevadans first.”For more information on the 287(g) program, visit: https://www.ice.gov/identify-and-arrest/287g
