Hawthorne Army Depot Commander’s Rep., Retired Army Colonel

Dear Armed Forces Day Participants and Attendees:

Larry M. Cruz

On behalf of the Hawthorne Army Depot, I want to wish you all a heartfelt welcome to the 73rd Annual Hawthorne Armed Forces Day parade and celebration. Armed Forces Day was established in 1950 by President Harry Truman to replace separate celebrations for the Army Day, Navy Day, and Air Force Day. The new Armed Forces Day reinforced the unification of these military branches under the Department of Defense. Today, Armed Forces Day is a joint celebration of all six branches of the U.S. military: the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Air Force and Space Force. This day honors all individuals currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and is often marked with parades, flyovers, marches, and other public events.

The Army fights and wins the nations land wars preserving peace and security and providing for the defense of the United States, the Commonwealths and possessions and any areas occupied by the United States; supporting national policies, implementing national objectives, and overcoming any nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United States. The Marine Corps has been America’s expeditionary force in readiness since 1775. They are forward deployed to respond swiftly and aggressively in times of crisis. They are Soldiers of the sea, providing forces and detachments to naval ships and shore operations. The Navy protects America at sea. Alongside our allies and partners, the Navy defends freedom, preserves economic prosperity, and keeps the seas open and free. The Air Force fly’s, fights, and wins our nation’s air wars. The Coast Guard ensures our Nation’s maritime safety, security, and stewardship. The US Space Force is the newest branch of the Armed Forces that organizes, trains, and equips space forces. Of course, we never want to forget about the Army National Guard; Air National Guard and our Reserve Forces: The Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Marice Corps Reserve, Air Force Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve.

As America’s most patriotic home, the community of Hawthorne and Mineral County have a strong history and tradition of loyally supporting our nations hero’s. To our Armed Forces Day Committee, I would simply say Thank You for taking the time and effort to host yet another fabulous Armed Forces Day recognition in honor of those who serve to preserve our peace and prosperity. I would also like to recognize our Grand Marshall, retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Mr. Bob Swift (aka: Speedy). At 93 years young, Bob is still Swift and Speedy!
