- On February 11, 2014 the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Investigation Division received a request for investigative assistance from the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office. As a result of the subsequent investigation Division, police arrested Stephen M. Gustafson, on one felony count of grand theft.
- Mineral County Sheriff Stewart Handte looked relieved the Monday following Armed Forces Day weekend. “For my first Armed Forces Day, it went pretty well,” Handte said.

- A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the Hawthorne Convention Center designating the center as listed on the state register as the one of the original USO buildings still in existence.
- Petty Officer Anthony Cordova made “Sailor of the Quarter“ at N. A. S. Fallon. Anthony is the son of Richard and Evelyn Cordova of Hawthorne.
- Art show winners were: Oscar Hillyer, Erika Pyatt, Sharon Swindler, Don Banfield, Willow Phillips and Sharon Hughes.

- Mr. and Mrs. Ike Worthen, residents of Walker Lake, were both injured in an accident on Highway 95 at Walker Lake. The accident involved Worthen’s small pick-up truck and an 18-wheeler loaded with potatoes. The large truck turned over on the top of the pickup and Mr. Worthen was pinned in the pickup under the big load of potatoes. Mrs. Worthen and the truck driver were treated for minor injuries at Mt. Grant Hospital. Mr. Worthen was flown to Reno by a Care Flight helicopter that landed on scene.
- Echo Drillard was named “Armed Forces Day 1994 Queen”. First runner up in the queen contest was Dianna Butler and Brandi Herrebrugh was chosen as second runner up.
- The local Marine Corps Test Ranger (known as the USMC Lance Corporal Carter Test Ranger), was testing 105mm ammunition for the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps. Don Dockrey of Hawthorne was the director of the test range, located south of town.

- The community planned to celebrate the 34th annual Armed Forces Day with Congresswoman Barbara Vucanovich, Lt. Governor Bob Castellani, Supreme Court Justice Noel Manoukian, State Treasurer Patty Cafferata, and State Controller Darry Daines planning to attend. Parade Marshals were Hank Barlow and Felix Del Porto, both had been residents of the community since 1929 and retired from the Naval Ammunition Depot. “Meeting the challenge “ was the theme for the parade.
- Student Body Officers for MCHS were elected, Rocky Flanary, president, Louis Rutledge, vice president, Kelly Richardson, secretary, Gina Paulidis, treasurer and Rob Press, school board representative.
- Soroptimist International of Hawthorne fulfilled a project to purchase and plant trees to provide shade at the local dog shelter. Soroptimist President apat Kumler was shown planting the trees with animal control officer Tom Cartwright and John Elder.

- Some of the older boys participating in the Armed Forces Day boxing program were Bobby Marshall, John Tippin, Jerry Herod, Aaron Faucett, Tim Beer, Mike Beer, Joe Beer, Andy Stinson, Randy McClanhan, Raymundo Lopez and Nathan Williams.
- Custodian of the Hawthorne Town Convention Center was changed by the Mineral County Park and Recreation Commission to the county clerk’s office.
- Teachers of the Mineral County School District received a substantial salary increase as a result of finding an arbitrator.
60 Years Ago
- Miss Judy Lynn, beautiful nationally known entertainer and western singer, advised Colonel Olin Beall that she would happily accept the invitation to serve as the Parade Marshal in the annual Armed Forces Day Parade because she had so many friends in Hawthorne having appeared here several times. The Judy Lynn Show was headlining at Lake Tahoe at the time and State Senator Brace Parks of Hawthorne flew to Tahoe and brought Judy to Hawthorne, then flew her back after the parade.
- Many dignitaries participated in the celebration including U.S, Senator Alan Bible and Nevada Governor Grant Sawyer. The theme of the celebration was the Nevada Centennial, and featured a colorful water pageant at Walker Lake.
- George Milich, one of this area’s colorful pioneers, died at his home on Cottonwood Canyon on Mount Grant. He was 81. George and his wife Mary had lived in Cottonwood Canyon where they took up homesteading in 1912 and lived there over 50 years. Mrs. Milich preceded him in death a few years earlier. George was born In Montenegro on August 18, 1882, he was educated in his native land and had served as a Captain in the Serbian Army before coming to America. Services were conducted by Bishop Alvin F. Hughes of the Hawthorne Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at the Hawthorne Funeral Home and burial was in the Hawthorne Cemetery.

- The Hawthorne grammar school baseball team was in a top position in league play “walloping” both Fallon and Yerington and only Carson City to face in their division.
- After one day of work on Hawthorne city accounts, the Reno firm of Kafoury and Armstrong withdrew and recommended the city find some other firm to perform that service.
80 Years Ago
- Judge J.S. Salter of Winnemucca ruled in favor of N.E. Conklin to temporarily fill the office of district attorney under his appointment as a deputy.
- U.S. Senator Pat McCarran announced an appropriation of $430,250 for additional work at the Hawthorne Naval Ammunition Depot.
90 Years Ago
- The NAD Marine baseball team lost their first game of the season to Scott Motors team from Reno.
- Captain E.H. Petrie (temporary army rank) announced that he would be returning to active duty with the U.S. Navy with the rank of Lieutenant. All naval officers were to conclude their services in CCC camps by July 1.
- Southern Pacific Railroad officials from Salt Lake City arrived in Mina by special train to express appreciation for increased business. Two mills were operating in the area. One at Silver Dyke and the Kernick Mill at Sodaville.
- An editorial in the Tonopah Times Bonanza criticized National Recovery Administrator Hugh Johnson for “going about the country waxing his arms, shaking his fists, shouting big business is wrecking the recovery program.”
- George E. McCracken, Principal of the Churchill County High School, was the principal speaker at the Mineral County High School graduation exercises and presented diplomas to Dorothy Barton, Donald Conelly, John Connelly, Coleman Hughes, Frances (Lover) Mason, Stella N. Stinson and Warren J. Wathen.
