  • Timely tips from the Fallon Police Department and Churchill County Sheriff’s Dept. Led to the arrest of Miguel Gutierrez, the main suspect in the stabbing that took place at the El Capitan Lodge and Casino in the early morning hours of April 5.
  • Following the approval of a change application by the Nevada Fish and Wildlife Federation, the Federal Decree Court has been asked to give its approval of the ruling by the Nevada state engineer. This ruling came three years after NFWF submitted the initial application.
  • Students looked attentively at one another and their class instructor as each spoke a brief introduction and told their peers what brought them to this Mineral County Economic Development Authority classroom.

  • Sidewalks were poured by Mineral County Public Works on West 5th Street in Hawthorne. New sidewalks are to be poured along Fifth from Armory Street to O Street.
  • Robert Mathias received a certificate of merit for 15 years of service to Day & Zimmerman. Rob began his career as a firefighter.

  • A tax override question for the purpose of emergency equipment for the Mineral County Fire Department was to be put on the general ballot in November, the County Commissioners decided.
  • Merle Swanson of Mina met with county commissioners to ask that a working committee be formed to help care for the cemetery in Mina. The ordinance in effect for Mineral County cemeteries is to make sure that records are collectly kept not work that needs to be completed.

  • Mineral County High School Junior-Senior Prom was held at the Hawthorne Armory with 152 people attending. The queen was Teri Marshall with Cathy Hoverson, Laura DeBolt and Wendy Tucker as runners up. Rocky Flannary was king with Chris Lawrence, Robert Pruss and Keith Haley as runners up.
  • Preliminary report of the 1982 Century of Agriculture showed that the number in the county increased from 32-41. A farm was defined as any place which $1000 or more of agriculture products sold or would have been sold.

  • Hawthorne men nominated to service academies by Senators Alan Bible and Howard Cannon were announced. Mark A. Peterson was among the young men nominated for Annapolis and Richard Pain was nominated to the Air Force Academy. West Point appointees included Michael Kunzi, Mark Peterson, Edwin Raugust and Gerald Wayne Pellett.
  • The Junior High spelling contest was directed by Mrs. Elenor Angelo, David Cochenour and Nona Baker, Grade seven winners were Mari Bray, first, Kathy Martin second and Dan Sam of Schurz taking third. Anna Rosemore won first in the eighth grade division, Ruth Priddis took second, and Bill Sanchez won third.
  • Hawthorne spelling contest winners were pictured in the newspaper. The sixth grade contest, under the direction of Mrs. Elizabeth Ray, was won by Sandra, Beverly Sutton won second and Tammy Oglesby was third.

  • Men’s city bowling tournament winners were pictured in the newspaper. Doubles champions were Gray Robinson and Ben Murray, with J. Paulette and D. Bell taking second. Stan Edwards was all event scratch champion A Division, H Taylor was B Division champion and Frank Turner was the Champion of B singles.
  • Winners in the VFW “Voice of Democracy” contest were shown receiving their awards at ceremonies conducted by President of the Auxiliary, Thelma Schroeder, Glenda Hammock was runner up in the local contest who received a certificate of merit and Marc Connelly received a second place award.
  • Hawthorne Serpents won two baseball games, one over Douglas 11-1, and Yerington 3-1.

  • Ben Kruckenber , well known Hawthorne painter and more familiarly known as “Nevada Ben ‘’ suffered a broken arm, broken nose and other bruises and injuries when he fell while painting a sign at the Home Cafe.
  • Merrill and Betty Christensen reported that a pigeon that had been meeting Bonanza Airline planes as they approached the Hawthorne Airport had been clipped by the wing of the plane. The Christenson’s had caged the injured pigeon and were nursing it back to health.
  • A contract was to oil the surface 23 miles of highway south of Mina. Young and Smith of Salt Lake City won the contract at $85,651.75.

  • Conklin filed a motion challenging the right of Fifth Judicial District Court to hear cases between himself and L.E. Blaisdell as to which man was legally appointed acting district attorney.
  • Applications for federal funds to Nevada school districts, amounting to $172,056, have been approved by the Federal Works Agency, according to word received from Senator J.G. Scrugham.
  • Included in the total was $35,330 for Mineral County with Hawthorne Elementary School District No. 7 receiving $29,850, Mineral County High School Board of Education $13,174, and Luning School District $1306. Other allotments of funds for assistance in the cost of maintenance of facilities for the present school year were Tungsten school district, $16,200 and Basic Townsite $129,526.
  • An organizational meeting was held to form the Order of Rainbow for girls in the Hawthorne area sponsored by the Mt. Grant Chapter of Eastern Star and the Hawthorne Lodge of Masons.

  • Joe Jones, Hawthorne’s most ardent fisherman caught the first cut throat of the season at Walker Lake. The fish weighed 111/2 pounds and was 32 inches long.
  • A spirited school board election was held in the county. Elected trustees in Hawthorne were Neil McGee who defeated J.R. Baker, and A.H. Chase who won over Jane Armstrong. At Mina, Guy Eckley defeated Marvel Hussar and Edna Sneddon, while Harrington (Chub) Betty defeated William Dedman, J.C. Muckers, John Curley and William Morgan real unopposed at Rawhide.
  • The Schurz baseball team upset the favored CCC team 11-9 in an exciting game played on the CCC diamond. Ben Johnson and Art Williams held the favored CCC boys to scattered hits while their teammates more than matched theC’s with hitting power.mothers in the Schurz lineup were McCloud, C. Johnson, Johnnie Mike, Sullivan Tom, Ed Brown, R. Higgins, L. Quartz, and J. Quartz.
  • Hawthorne boy’s baseball team proved no match for the bruisers from Mina who racked up 30 runs, while Hawthorne could score only three against the pitching of Dan Kalember, others in the Mina lineup were Mike Kalember, Weldon Walsh, Leland Eckley, Ray Belleville, M. Whiteneck and H. Whiteneck. Games and Herrera, Taking the rubbing for Hawthorne were Johanningmeit, Engblom, Stockton, Chiatovich, MvCloskey, Edison, Cross, Soper, Smith, Baker and Buckingham.
