  • No one knew how long the 28 foot Sea Ray boat lay by the shores of Walker Lake, too long for Sheriff Stewart Handte’s taste. Using his authority under the Nuisance Ordinance, on March 28, the sheriff made up his mind the boat had to go.
  • A juvenile who allegedly made a March 28 Facebook threat toward a Mineral County School Teacher is facing criminal charges and expulsion.
  • The 6th Street School, currently leased to Green Energy Nevada LLC, for the purpose of renovation with the intent to train prospective associates, is currently mired in red tape.

  • U.S. Senator Harry Reid called a “Summit in Hawthorne to bring together various groups that are really concerned about Walker Lake, so he could obtain information from each . More than 250 people attended the special meeting held at the Hawthorne Civic Center.
  • Assemblyman Jim Gibbons of Sparks, Republican candidate for governor Nevada was the first candidate to visit Mineral County to campaign for the office.
  • The 226th Transportation Company, US Army Reserve Unit from Grant City, Illinois was spending its two week tour duty training at the Hawthorne Army Ammunition Plant.

  • Glenda Mansfield of Mina was pictured in the newspaper as one of the first $2,000 winners in the Safeway bingo contest.
  • Students pictured in the newspaper participating in the Cooperative Education Program at Mineral County High School were Kenneth Jackson, Chery Martin, and Wade Barton.
  • Winners of the 1974 Shamrock Tournament at the Walker Lake Country Club were Joseph Rutski and Al Payne.

  • The Hawthorne Junior Chamber Commerce planned to hold an annual Easter Egg Hunt to be held at the high school food field.
  • Sierra Pacific Power Company was preparing a proposal to the atomic energy commission of a nuclear power plant a short distance from Yerington.
  • Uncle Vane Day said: “ One should learn to grow slowly, like nature itself. Only when we learn to live in the present can our human senses be fully alive. If you hurry through life with just a distant goal in view, you miss the enjoyment of the trip..”

  • A good crap game was broken up at the El Capitan Sunday night when the pit boss reached out and grabbed back an estimated $800 In winnings in a split second after he had examined the “special “ dice used by a player.
  • Ben H. Miller who had served as Justice of the Peace at Schurz the past 14 months submitted his resignation.
  • A 20 year old Marine stationed at NAD died when his car plunged over the cliffs into rocks  200 feet below Walker Lake.
  • A picture of the bar at the Nevada Club showed many contributions of dimes from customers to the March of Dimes campaign. When the dimes were counted more than $450 was donated to the cause.
  • The Red Cross fund drive reached the $1,000 mark, it was reported by Mrs. Leita Bunting, fund drive chairman.

80 Years Ago

  • Seven Mineral County registrants left for military service. Leaving Hawthorne were Raymond Sammaripa, Ed Thomas, Hallie D. Mariam, Leonard Erickson, William Merchant, Lyle Tiller and Fred G. Kinerson.
  • A free movie program was presented as part of the county cancer fund drive.
  • New motions were argued in local court to determine whether N. E. Conklin or L.E. Blaisdell was legally appointed district attorney of Mineral County.
  • The county commission authorized the purchase of a garbage truck with a special body for $3,335. The commissioners also awarded a contract for the construction of a duplex apartment to be built on town property and to be used to quarter old age persons who had been living in tent houses. The contract amount was $2560.

90 Years Ago

  • Harry Frost, owner of the Reno Printing Company and his pilot, Ted Morrill, made a pancake landing when the brakes locked on their plane as they came in for a landing at the airstrip west of Hawthorne (near the Lakeview housing area). Both men escaped injury and the damaged plane was towed to the naval depot to await repairs. Morrill remained in Hawthorne while Frost continued home to Reno by auto.

Robert E. Overman, of Reno, supervisor of airports in Nevada for the federal government, announced in Hawthorne that emergency landing strips would be built in Mina And Schurz, and a smaller field at Queen near Mt. Montgomery. Work was done by CWA crews.

  • Isbell Construction Company was awarded a contract to construct 12.29 miles of highway from basalt to the California state line via Mt Montgomery. George Pollock of Sacramento, who was completing construction of the highway from Coaldale to Basalt, was awarded a contract to oil 20.3 miles of highway from Rhodes Marsh three miles west of Luning.
