The Mineral County High boys basketball team ripped off a pair of late season wins over Coleville and Sage Ridge to earn a spot in the quarterfinals of the regional tournament. The Serpents finished the season 10-4 in league play in third place.
Mineral County hosted Sage Ridge on Tuesday in the tournament and earned a 65-32 win to advance to the semifinals against Smith Valley in Fernley on Friday. The Serpents raced out to a 34-17 lead during Tuesday’s playoff game and outscored Sage Ridge 23-2 in the third quarter to put the game on ice.
In the two conference games this season against the Bulldogs, the two teams split. The winner will move onto the championship game on Saturday at either noon or 2 p.m. at Fernley High.
“The boys must do their best defense to shut down the outside shooting of the Bulldogs to win this game,” said coach Pete Summerbell. “They must also take better care of the basketball, cut down turnovers and rebounds.”
The Mineral County girls also reached the quarterfinals of the playoffs but fell to ROP 54-29 to end their season.
