On Saturday, August 12, the Mineral County School District is inviting parents and community members to the annual “Back to School Community Resource Fair” to be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the lawn of the MCSD administration building located at 751 A Street.

The Community Chest is hosting the fair to bring the community together to raise awareness regarding the organizations and resources available in the community. Local agencies will have tables with information, resources, and a school supply for children that could include expo markers, highlighters, glue sticks, etc.

“There’s a wide variety of school supplies that vendors will be handing out, including colored pencils, scissors, composition notebooks, and more,” says Community Chest Program Director Sarah Dilliard.

“We’re blessed that this is our second year and that our community partners have been generous to the students’ needs,” Dilliard adds. The MCSD will also be providing lunch.

Families with students in PreK up to 12th grade as well as those who are homeschooled are invited to attend. This will also be an opportunity for students to sign up for school clubs, extracurricular activities, and recruit volunteers. There are at least local, regional, and community service partners ranging from utility assistance and the propane company to financial resources (the Horizons Credit Union will be there) and information regarding substance and mental health programs. Representatives from the newly formed Central Nevada Health District, the health nurse, and Mt. Grant General Hospital will also be at the fair providing immunizations.

There are 19 vendors who are signed up to participate in the fair so far, and the Community Chest is still accepting applications. Last year, in its inaugural event, 22 vendors joined the fair and around 300 students came out for it.

“We’re trying to think of how to best make the entrance to the new school year a smooth one,” Dillard says. “This is for students from preschool to senior year; it’s available to all,” she adds.
