The Mineral County Recreation & Development Department in conjunction with the Sportsman Club of Hawthorne will be hosting kayak races on September 9, 2023. It is still in the early planning stages of the event, but there will be pro, amateur, and kids divisions, all that will pay cash prizes to first, second, and third place in each division.

“We’re leaning towards starting the event at 8-9 a.m. an will offer prize money for the pro class to try to get people from Mammoth, Tahoe, June…all of those areas to come down and race,” says MC Recreation & Development Director Kyle Isom. “We’ll have an amateur class for some of the surrounding people that’ll pay money, too,” he adds.

The course is around 12 miles long for the pro race, 6 miles long for the amateur race, and a few hundred yards for the kids race. The main race will start at Monument Beach (formerly known as State Beach) and go to 20-Mile Beach and back. There will also some drag races, relay races, or some kind of short sprint at the end.

More details will come available as it gets closer to the event.
