The Hawthorne junior high Solar Rollers took fifth place in a high school solar powered radio controlled car race held in Reno.

On June 1, the Hawthorne Junior High “Solar Rollers” took fifth place in a high school solar powered radio controlled car race held in Reno.

Teachers Monica Keady and Brian Thompson monitored students as they designed, built and practiced driving a solar powered RC car.

The team consisted of Shaylee Gavin; Brennan Dore’; Amya Reyes and Mason Gemelke with Keady and Thomspon. This group worked after school almost every day from the beginning of April until the day before the race. The hard work paid off as the students placed fifth in a field of 12 cars.

The kit to build the car and entrance fees associated with the contest were paid for by Tesla.

“Because of the success of our Junior High team, Tesla agreed to give Mineral County High School two kits next year. We will be competing with a high school team as well as a junior high team,” John Gavin, counselor for the schools stated.
