Weeks of hard work, tears and laughter paid off on Saturday, May 4 as contestants for the 69th annual Armed Forces Day pageant were able to showcase their smiles under yards of tulle.
Dancing to “Baby Shark doo doo” the teeny miss candidates stole the show while performing the popular hit song while wearing a shark fin atop their head. The girls showed off their dresses and smiled for the crowd, some working so hard at practice to step outside their comfort zones that they were no longer shy on stage. Crowned 2019 Teeny Miss Armed Forces Day was Tylie Mize with Finley Carr as runner-up.
The mini miss candidates showed off their rebel side on the stage where “rock is frowned upon and dancing is forbidden” to classic movie “Footloose”. The girls tied up the one who said dancing wasn’t allowed and rocked the gym in their cowgirl boots and flannel shirts. Aubrey Waggoner won the judges over as she was crowned 2019 Mini Miss Armed Forces Day – her stage mate, Harley Madrid was crowned runner-up.
In poodle skirts and cat-rimmed glasses the junior miss and miss contestants bopped their way onto stage to the tune of “We Go Together” from the high school classic “Grease”. Unlike the smaller contestants, the junior and miss ladies had to perform, show off their evening wear while answering an array of questions. The miss candidates had to perform a talent. Shaylee Gavin, thanked those in the military with a self-written poem and signed the performance in American Sign Language. Runner up Amara Lang performed a self-choreographed dance.
This is the last year that coordinator Alicia Dalton will be helping with the event. The candidates will participate as the Armed Forces Day court in weekend events such as the parade.
