Dear Editor,

A great big thank you to Dr. Gooch and to the junior and senior high bands and choruses for a delightful concert March 16. Thanks to Dr. Gooch for his dedication and leadership. Thanks to the players and singers for their devotion and for keeping their instruments and voices active when there was no music program.

The return of live banks and choral music was an inspirational joy.

I have three nits to pick. First, please let us have more advance notice for the next concert. I’m sure some of us missed the event as it occurred on the same day the newspaper came out. Those of us who don’t have children or grandchildren in school still enjoy live music. Second, Dr. Gooch, please put your name on the program. Third, turn up the volume on the p.a. system so we can hear what you say about each selection. Kudos to the students for their enthusiastic support of their fellow performers. Along with athletics, it is heartening to see the return of school spirit.

Dear Editor,

I attended the combined concert of the junior high and high school band and choir on March 16, presented under the direction of newly-hired Dr. Gooch.  Knowing that the program is very new, I wondered how they could possibly be ready for a concert so soon.  To my amazement, a full hour of musical entertainment took place, with all the musicians doing exceptionally well.   There is definitely talent among our Mineral County students and Dr. Gooch has already succeeded in tapping that talent.  A standing ovation followed the performance.   The music program deserves community support and recognition.  I believe we can expect great things to come as it grows and flourishes.

Dear Editor,

As a taxpayer of this county, I don’t mind most of the time “paying my way”, but this new raise of the landfill assessment is just too much. Why didn’t our new commissioners step up for us and tell Hawthorne Utilities to better manage their budget or make do? Who are the commissioners working for anyway and just what happens to the other departments when they come before commission with needs greater than their budgets?

Oh yes, that’s right they don’t get to add on to our already state, maxed limit, property tax bill. How do you attract new property owners with this kind of management of our burdening taxes? We have a lot of empty lots in this town but if I was a prospective buyer and saw the property tax levels, I’d look elsewhere.

Who is for a recall of these commissioners and rescinding the landfill back to $90 a year? I’ll be glad to take the petition around for signatures. There were only two of us that I could see at the public meeting held for this big hit on our pockets, but maybe that’s what they planned by setting the time at 1:30 in the afternoon.
