Hawthorne Elementary School students take cover during an earthquake drill last week.

Mineral County School District students and staff participated in this year’s Great Nevada ShakeOut. Students were taught how to correctly handle themselves if an earthquake were to hit their school or home.

Over 630,000 businesses, homes and students just like Mineral County’s participated in this year’s event. The mock quake hit the school at exactly 10:15 a.m. Students, had been preparing for this day and quickly took to under their desks where they had shelter from falling debris and hung on until the drill was over.

In Mineral County, earthquakes are not uncommon and in 2011 a cluster of quakes hit the area with over ten a day.

Besides the 590 students who participated, 65 individuals from Mt. Grant General Hospital also took cover.
