The 1704 celebrated the Elks National Youth Activities week by hosting a dinner and awards ceremony at the lodge on Thursday, May 7. The Grand Exalted Ruler has declared that May 1 through May 7 be set aside as National Youth Activity Week. Youth activities are a top priority with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks across America. Four local youth were honored for their involvement in youth activities.
Awards were given to Ethan Nelms and Jerzi Moody. They were selected as top male and top female youth athletes in Mineral County for 2015.
Hawthorne’s own Andre White was honored for being the State Hoop Shoot Champion in his age class, 8-9 boys. The competition was held in Hawthorne on Feb. 7 of this year. White went onto to the regionals in Las Vegas, but did not qualify for nationals.
Diego Pittman was also honored for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. Troop 75 is sponsored by the Hawthorne Elks Lodge.
The students sat at the head table along with Exalted Ruler Steve McBride, and other lodge officials while their families looked on from the audience.
“These kids are winners and role models in the community” said McBride, and they were treated as such here that night.
