Anna Howell, of Hawthorne, celebrated birthday 102 on Aug. 19 at the Lesa C. Seran Skilled Nursing Facility at Mt. Grant Hospital. Many friends and family attended the event. Silver Springs musician Joseph Greco provided a healthy dose of old-time country music.

“She lived alone, taking care of herself, until she was 96. It’s amazing. She’s been my mother-in-law for 59 years,” said Howell’s daughter-in-law, Laura Fuller.

“She also worked real hard all her life. She raised two wonderful boys,” added Laura Fuller.

Born in Oklahoma, Howell moved to Hawthorne in 1947. She eventually went to work at what was then the Naval Ammunition Depot, from where she eventually retired.

Howell also traveled extensively and enjoyed gardening and crocheted beautiful doilies.

When asked the secret to her longevity, Howell said, “I don’t really know, to tell you the truth.” Howell’s son, Harold Fuller said, “She goes for a walk every day. She uses a walker, but she gets around.”

“We’re very proud of her. We’re looking forward to celebrating birthday 103,” concluded Laura Fuller.
