On May 21, chairman Carl Johnson and the Walker River Paiute Tribe honored the veterans of the community. The evening started with the presentation of the flags and an Indian flag song sung by Mike Hansen. Each veteran was gifted with a very nice embroidered jacket with their name.

This honor was long overdue to these men and women who scarified so much in their lives for our freedoms. A very special and heartfelt “thank you” goes to Casey Green and Starla Green from Warm Springs, Ore. for traveling to Schurz and bringing fresh salmon; singing honor songs; and gifting our veterans: one with a Pendleton blanket, one with a beaded knife saber and another with cigarettes. Casey also honored the veterans with a beautiful flute rendition of Taps and Amazing Grace. Other local people also offered songs of honor and each veteran present was personally thanked by all in attendance.
