The Hawthorne Elks lodge held a pizza party for the players of Hawthorne Little League last week. More than 100 hungry kids took part in the festivities.

BPOE Elks Lodge no. 1704 hosted a pizza bash for the Hawthorne Little League at their location on 595 W. 5th St. More than 100 ecstatic players an their parents crowded the Elks lodge. Many players went back through the line for seconds.

“Hawthorne Elks Lodge 1704, going along with the national Grand Lodge, is sponsoring the National Youth Activity Week. We’re hosting a party for the Little League and also the Boy Scout and Cub Scout packs of Hawthorne, besides sponsoring a team,” said Steve McBride, the lodge’s Exalted Ruler.

The lodge also sponsors Cub Scout Pack 32, Boy Scout Troop 75 and Boy Scout/Cub Scout Troop 75.  

A $500 check was presented by McBride to Jason Cardenas, and his sister Jamie Cardenas, who runs the concession stand.

“This is what Elks do,” McBride said. “Youth activities are the number one priority in the nation for Elks. We try to do something for our youth every year; this is the first time we’ve done something on this scale; It’s looking good.

McBride also thanked the more than 20 Elks volunteers who participated in the event. “It’s not just a one-man-show.”
