Central Nevada Health District Brings Personalized
Care to Rural Communities
Local clinics. Bilingual staff. Real flexibility.
June 25, 2025 (FALLON, Nev.) – When a global health crisis exposed gaps in Nevada’s rural communities’ health infrastructure, four counties and a neighboring city rolled up their sleeves and got to work building something better. The result: the Central Nevada Health District—the state’s first multi-county rural health district, built from the ground-up by neighbors, for neighbors. In a region where public health services have too often meant low accessibility and limited options, CNHD is a thriving example of how local communities can lead the way in creating solutions that take care of their own. From immunization clinics and education sessions, to clean water and safe food, CNHD provides clinical, environmental and public health services you can count on.
Covering Churchill, Mineral, Eureka and Pershing counties plus the City of Fallon, CNHD isn’t just about access that’s close to home, it’s the first rural-focused health district in Nevada history. It was not created from top-down mandates, but from grassroots necessity. CNHD is about removing barriers, building trust and community connection. It’s about knowing you by name and providing services that help keep you safe, without the confusing red tape.
“The Central Nevada Health District is care that’s in your corner,” said Dr. Justin Heath, medical representative of the board. “It’s accessible, community-centric and meets people where they are. Public health in central Nevada can’t rely on the same solutions as our urban neighbors. Our communities are spread out, diverse and strong. We’ve built a system that reflects that and is working to meet the needs of rural Nevadans.”
In a few years, CNHD has quietly worked in the background, protecting rural communities’ health and safety. From improving vaccine access and expanding immunization programs to launching local clinics and outreach campaigns, the district is delivering real results. Each participating community now has clear points of contact and local public health support, from clean water to family planning, where none existed before.
CNHD is transforming what rural public health can be: flexible, familiar and right down the road. Whether it’s offering sliding scale fees or bilingual staff, CNHD is designed to meet people where they are—literally and figuratively. Located within and as part of rural communities, CNHD is able to offer local small business on-site guidance and hands-on support to help them meet standards in a practical, neighborly way.
CNHD was recently honored with a 2025 NACo Achievement Award in the Health category, recognized for its innovative approach to creating a rural health district.
