Hawthorne Army Depot Invitation to Review the Munitions Response Sites
Prioritization Protocol (MRSPP) for the following Munitions Response Sites
(MRS):

HWAAP-020-R-01

For decades, the Department of Defense (DoD) has utilized military munitions
in training and testing to maintain force readiness. Munitions remaining from
DoD activities may pose explosive, chemical agent, human health, and
environmental hazards at active installations under DoD control. Whenever a
former range or disposal site is repurposed, remediation actions must be taken
to address any remaining explosive hazards in the environment.
The Protocol mandates that DoD Components apply a prioritization
methodology to determine the relative priority for munitions response actions at
MRSs. The priority assigned is based on the overall conditions at each MRS.
The United States Army offers all stakeholders opportunities to participate
throughout the Protocol’s application. This typically occurs upon the
completion of an environmental investigation or remediation phase. The Army
is required to notify the public of the opportunity to participate in the
application of the Protocol, publish an announcement requesting participation,
consider stakeholders’ input in prioritization decisions, and document
stakeholder input. The Army recognizes that stakeholder involvement is an
effective way to identify and address concerns about environmental and safety
issues related to MRSs. Once an MRS’s relative priority is determined, the
Army will provide stakeholders with the opportunity to review and comment on
how an MRS is scored for response actions.
Following completion of a remedial action, Hawthorne Army Depot has
updated the MRSPP proposed score for the following MRS: HWAAP-020-R-01
Whiskey Flat. Hawthorne Army Depot invites all stakeholders to review and
comment on the MRSPP documents, which will be available for public viewing
at 1 South Maine Avenue, Building 5, Hawthorne, NV 89415. Please send your
comments or questions regarding MRSPP to Mr. Gregory Jacobs via email at
gregory.b.jacobs.civ@army.mil.
The comment and review period will extend for 30 days, until 30 June, 2025.
