This May the library will be offering a new delivery service to homebound, caregivers, and patrons in underserved areas. The Mineral County Library On the Go! Bookmobile will begin delivering in the weeks after an inaugural run in the Armed Forces Parade on May 18. For those hoping to see the Bookmobile up close, the vehicle will be on display at Mineral County Library immediately following the parade.

The bookmobile is a converted ambulance that was transferred from the Mineral County Fire Department at the request of Library Director Courtney Oberhansli. Funds for the conversion of the bookmobile were provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and administered by the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records. The grant (#2022-33) of $31,665 in Federal money represented 93% of the total costs with 7% in the amount of $2340 financed with in-kind work and county general funds. The project funded the conversion of the vehicle as well as a starter collection of library materials; book carts; a laptop, printer, and supplies.

Silver State Industries out of Carson City did a beautiful job stripping and then converting the interior with new upholstery, new flooring and paint, changing out the electrical components to our specifications and installing a tabletop desk area. On the exterior they removed all emergency services lights and where holes were left, they did a great deal of body work before painting. They expressed their enjoyment of having such a wonderful community project to work on.

When Silver State Industries completed their work, the bookmobile was delivered to The Sign and Design Shop in Reno where a graphics package was installed. Local Wade Barton of Hawthorne’s Sign City worked with The Sign and Design Shop and assisted with the package installation. Director Oberhansli worked closely with the shop to create a design that showcases Mineral County. The Sign and Design Shop did a beautiful job in creating such a visually appealing bookmobile.

Community members who believe they may be eligible for the new delivery service should call the library at 775-945-2778 to find out more. As this service goes forward, staff members will be working with those who are signed up for the service to determine what library items to deliver.

Federal grants help this library to provide services which otherwise would not be available. Mineral County Library is proud to provide this new service and staff members are excited to be reaching out to those who may have been underserved. The library is grateful that the IMLS exists to enable these types of projects to develop and grow.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s libraries and museums. They advance, support, and empower America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations through grantmaking, research, and policy development. IMLS envisions a nation where individuals and communities have access to museums and libraries to learn from and be inspired by the trusted information, ideas, and stories they contain about our diverse natural and cultural heritage.
