- Four Hawthorne members of Metallic Ventures team at Esmeralda Mine displayed the first gold dore “button” poured at the operations on Feb. 16. The Hawthorne members pictured were: Lisa Edison-Assay Lab, Robert Barta- warehouseman, Irene Castleman-mine clerk, and Chuck Jackson- surveyor.
- Job shadowing was held for junior high students last week. Elyse Trujillo shadowed her grandfather Vic Trujillo at the Hawthorne Justice Court where he is a judge, Lindsay Reuter shadowed her mother, Barbara Reuter at the Financial Horizons Credit Union and Jaci Lee shadowed her mother, Debbie Lee at the CAHS where Jaci also volunteers her time each Wednesday with the Child Care Program.
- Word was received that Dr. Robert Shaw, long time medical provider at Mt. Grant General Hospital had passed away on Feb. 19 in Oklahoma.

- The Lady Serpents basketball team defeated the Lady Lions from Yerington 74-5, and remained undefeated in season play. (Their record was 10 wins and 0 losses). They only had one more game to play to clinch the conference championship, this was against second place Fernley Vaqueros.
- The Serpents varsity basketball team played a very exciting game on the same night but were edged out by the Yerington Lions by a single point 74-73.
- A two day seminar on Child Abuse And Physical Abuse was held in Hawthorne at the El Capitan. The instructor for the seminar was Jim Mead, the President and Founder of “For Kids Sake, Inc.”

- Buster Heckman was finalizing his plans to travel to Parker, Arizona to participate in the 7 hour Enduro Boat Race.
- Students as well as parents, attended the well publicized school board meeting where the changes in many courses were extensively discussed.
- Joe’s Tavern advertisement in the newspaper said “We wouldn’t recommend turning on the air conditioners yet but with the kind of Spring weather we are having it is a good time to get out the rakes and hoes – unless the doctor recommends golf as a less strenuous form of exercise.”
- Walker Lake received a total of 350,000 Cutthroat trout during the annual fish planting conducted by the Nevada Wildlife Department.
- Howard Rosenberg, of Reno TV fame was scheduled to be the guest speaker at the annual Chamber of Commerce award dinner. The Chamber was planning to present awards to “Citizens of the Year.” The previous year’s recipients were Mike Kalember, Carolyn Trujillo and Jamie Jackson.

- The Serpent wrestlers competed their season with a 5-4 dual meet record. Mike Brown, Bruce Espinosa and Earnest McNeal led off with victories. Mark Griffin, Matt Griffin and Koz Smith all used an aggressive attack with Jim O’Brain, Pat Thyne and Mike Kunzi all worked hard. Pat Thyne was named vastly wrestler of the week, and Steve Funk won the JV Donor.
- A heavy windstorm belted Hawthorne during the day, sand blasting many automobiles.

- Southwest Gas Corporation applied for permission to expand the natural gas service line from Fallon Naval Air Station to Gabbs.
- A young man was being sought as a suspect in the murder of a woman in a hotel in Hawthorne.
- The Mineral County School Trustees approved contracts for administrations in all districts. Renewed contracts were made for Floyd Smalley- superintendent, Wallace Smith- assistant superintendent, Arlo Funk-high school principal Henry Tapley- vice principal of the high school, LaMar LeFevre -principal, and L.N. Wilson- vice principal of the Elementary school.
- Uncle Vane Day said: “About time a day is cured of swearing, it’s time to make up another income tax report. And it’s not far off.”

- The annual Walker Lake fish derby sponsored by the El Capitan started off with a fine specimen as C.L. Munger, a fireman at NAD, took the $100 for the first fish over 5 pounds. The trout weighed 5 1/4 pounds, C. J. (Jim) Chamberlain landed a 14 pound cutthroat trout using a “kids” pole, reel and line costing him about $5.00. The cutthroat, that he battled for 45 minutes, was 31 inches.
- D. Edward Culbertson was named as the new chairman of the Mineral County Republican party at the biennial party convention.
- An additional 500,000 cutthroat trout were planted in Walker Lake, making the total for the year 1 million trout. Also 225,000 Kokanee salmon had been planted in the lake.
- Manogue eliminated the Serpents from state tournament competition with a 75-62 win at Reno.
80 Years Ago
- In a full page advertisement, local residents were urged to put every single dime that could be spared in War Bonds. The Mineral County quota was $174,000. Local businesses sponsored Hawthorne men who were pictured in the ad. Captain Edward Pine was sponsored by Johnson’s Stop & Shop, SK 2/c Donald Conelly by Gregory’s Auto Court, Corporal Earl LeBeau by the Family Liquor Store, Sea 1/c Robert Dobson by Gilbert’s Clothing Store.
- Items on sale at Johnson’s Stop & Shop included a 2-pound glass canister of Hills Bros. Coffee, 67 cents, 25-pound bag of flour, $1.67, 100 pounds of granulated sugar, $7.26, and popular brands of cigarettes were $1.45 for a carton.
- A search party of civilians and servicemen found eight young Babbitt residents who were stranded overnight in the hills near Fletcher.
90 Years Ago
- Esmeralda Lodge No. 16 Knights of Pythias and Mineral Temple Pythian Sisters held a banquet and presented a program to honor the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Order. Esmeralda Lodge was chartered at Aurora and then transferred to Hawthorne when the population of Aurora dwindled.
- Guy A. McInnis was awarded a contract to haul mail between Thorne Station and Hawthorne for another four years. McInnis had been performing that service for eight years under a contract with the government.
