Dear Editor,

In the not too distant future Mineral County will almost certainly face significant financial problem. Why do I say this, you ask?

I had been in a business on Main Street on afternoon recently. When I left the store a scooter flew by me going almost as fast as the car in the street. Atop that two wheel skateboard was a young person who was probably in the early teen years. Overall I would evaluate the youth to possess both an X and a Y Chromosome, although I do not want to sound too judgmental.

But I wondered, how do we pay for the obvious lawsuit lurking in the shadows? Yes, some shyster looking to make a quick million or two will read about someone getting injured because of an accident with one of these things or an electric bicycle.

Let’s face it. Any number of things could happen: an octogenarian and their walker could go flying, a rambunctious 5 year old could get run over, a car driver might have to deal with the psychological trauma of watching the scooter rider disappear under their front bumper. The person riding that scooter or electric bicycle may sustain life changing injuries. Did I mention that I have yet to see any one of these young people wearing a helmet?

What is the shyster lawyer going to do? Look for the deepest pockets. Don’t get me wrong. I do have deep respect for some in the legal profession. But it is that 99% who give the profession a bad name. Face it folks, time is the only unknown factor. Someone is going to get hurt. Somehow you and I will be to blame. Somehow the deepest pockets will ultimately pay a very high price for the accident.
